Sexy Red Riding Hood

The Sexy Red Riding Hood project is a digital painting that explores my twisted adult fantasy style version of the traditional character seen in a very provocative outfit with a tight corset and stockings as well as a short skirt and the original red cloak.

My version of red riding hood shows a blonde character exposing most of her body and lifting her skirt to the eyes of wolves, to attract and lure the woodland stalkers into a violent death with the axe hidden under red riding hood's cloak.

The ruby gems I added to the golden crests on the corset and belt should attract viewers to the breasts and lower area of the body, keeping the focus on the female whilst she can prepare to strike down the victim.

I researched into adaptations and different twists on red riding hood and liked the idea of how she is portrayed as a charming hunter, luring wolves in the forest in a sexual awakening switching her character role to a murderous villain and the wolf into a victim.

I completed this digital painting using Photoshop CS6 and spent approximately 3 days to complete this project.

Stage 1 - Sketch

The first stage in this project was to draw a rough sketch of the red riding hood I had visualised in my mind, I pictured a female character standing looking down towards the viewer which I intend to be from the wolf's point of view.

In terms of the outfit, I wanted it to be slightly revealing due to the nature of the red riding hood so references from adult versions of the costumes included stockings and a short skirt as well as a bra with a trim.

I added a corset which would emphasise the figure of red riding hood and an axe underneath the body layer with 30% opacity so I could see the proportions and adjust it correctly when it is hidden behind the body.

For the skirt I wanted to draw red riding hood lifting the front part so that viewers could get a small view of her underwear. I felt the hand was slightly awkward in the rough sketch version so I adjusted the hand so it appears that red riding hood is lifting the skirt intentionally with a better view of her underwear as well as the flow of the skirt.

With the costume and details in place I refined the lineart with a pixel brush so that the colours would not be blocked by thick black lineart.

Stage 2 - Colours and Lighting

The images above on the left and middle show the comparison between the thick lineart and the think lineart when I applied the base colours.

I decided to work on the thin lineart for more detail and colour to show through. The image on the right shows the initial lighting and shades applied as I always define the light source first before moving on to the details.

I wanted the light source to shine down on to the front of red riding hood so that her beautiful body would be highlighted as the main subject of the image. I used an airbrush and blur tool to blend the light and shades into the clothing such as the stockings and the cloak.

One of my favourite features on this project was the skin tones on red riding hood's belly as I defined the skin with 3 layers of skin shades that I blended together so that the transition looked realistic with the support of the light and shadows.

In terms of the colouring on the red cloak I used 4 shades of red to show the creases within the material which I smudged following the lineart.

Stage 3 - Details and Refinement

With the colouring detail almost complete on red riding hood, I spent time refining the hair by adding shades and a light blonde shine across the hair. Large detail went into the corset and belt as I used a dark brown colour to direct the creases in the material with the support of lighter browns to show texture.

For the golden emblems I used a dotted airbrush to add textures to the gold which I blurred to reduce the intensity of the dotted texture. The ruby gem embedded into the golden emblems I was impressed with as I used a base red colour for the ruby and used 5 shades of red light and dark to draw small triangular shapes within the oval shaped ruby and blur the colours for the textured gem aesthetic.

I gathered feedback on my painting and that I could make the axe more visible to the viewer by applying a light glimmer so that the metal has a form of reflection as well as being a key part of the image that will attract the viewer's attention.

I used the same dotted airbrush for the gold emblem on the axe for a metal texture with pixel strokes of white to show small scratches within the axe. I used a custom white glimmer brush to create the shine on the middle of the axe.

To finish off the painting I used the gradient tool with a dark and light blue to represent the bright sky and a custom tree brush with 3 shades of green and the overlay blending option to create the forest background.
